Ponieważ nie byliśmy na prawdziwych wakacjach od trzech lat, moja Żona (Mrs B.) i ja, nie mogliśmy doczekać się ponownej wizyty w Chorwacji i Austrii, które według nas są najbardziej urzekającymi zakątkami w Europie. Uwielbiamy na wakacjach zwiedzać pieszo, a oba te kraje oferują naprawdę dużo interesujących i zróżnicowanych szlaków. Nie mniej podekscytowane podróżą były nasze małe chihuahua (pomimo swoich rozmiarów potrafią pokonać naprawdę długie trasy!), chociaż… przed wyjazdem niekoniecznie to okazywały.
Naszym pierwszym celem był położony nieopodal Rovinj na Istrii camping Polari, znajdujący się obecnie w ofercie partnera Eurocampu – firmy Roan Holidays. Zdecydowaliśmy się pojechać z Wrocławia samochodem, pomimo tego, że była możliwość lotu do Puli (38 km od naszego celu) i Triestu (145km). Lubimy podróżować samochodem na długie dystanse, jednak nie ukrywamy, że zadecydowała możliwość zabrania ze sobą piwa, wina, jedzenia i psich smakołyków na cały pobyt.
Byliśmy świadomi, że pomiędzy Wrocławiem, a campingiem Polari jest 1100 km- to 13 godzin podróży samochodem z paroma przerwami. W przeszłości staraliśmy się takie trasy pokonywać nocą, by uniknąć ruchu na drodze, ale tym razem zdecydowaliśmy się podzielić podróż na dwie części. W piątek rano musiałem pojawić się w pracy, ale miałem nadzieję urwać się przed lunchem, więc w piątek po południu zaplanowaliśmy podróż do Brna w Czechach (290 km, 4 godziny jazdy z Wrocławia), by następnego dnia rano pokonać pozostałą część trasy. Niestety, jak to zazwyczaj bywa, kiedy chcesz wyruszyć jak najszybciej, plan nawalił już na etapie wyjścia z pracy i w końcu wyruszyliśmy z domu dopiero o 16:00. Zamiast nocy w Brnie, musieliśmy zarezerwować nocleg w Hotelu Campanile, zaraz przy zjeździe z autostrady w Katowicach. Hotel przy cenie 100 zł za noc miał naprawdę dobry stosunek jakości do ceny, a naprzeciwko hotelu odkryliśmy McDonald’s, gdzie zjedliśmy i szybko poszliśmy spać, by nazajutrz z samego rana rozpocząć dalszą jazdę.
Wyjechaliśmy z Katowic o 6:00 rano i jadąc przez Czechy, Austrię i Słowenię dotarliśmy do Chorwacji. Podróż przebiegła zaskakująco łatwo, ruch był niewielki i dopisywała nam dobra pogoda, więc dotarliśmy na Camping Polari z dobrymi humorami około 17:00. Zdecydowaliśmy się tym razem na wakacje z firmą ROAN, bo uwielbiamy nocować pod namiotem, a poprzednie doświadczenie z namiotami Safari z firmy EUROCAMP (świetne!) skłoniły nas do próby porównania ich z namiotami Lodge Holiday ROAN. Najpierw zameldowaliśmy się w recepcji campingu Polari, gdzie pracownicy byli bardzo pomocni i dostarczyli nam mapy campingu i okolic, potem zostaliśmy skierowani do recepcji firm ROAN i GO4CAMP na miejscu.
Pilot firmy ROAN zaprowadził nas do naszego zakwaterowania i pierwsze wrażenia były genialne! Nie jestem do końca pewny, czy zdjęcia z katalogu firmy ukazują to odpowiednio, ale namioty były naprawdę przestronne, jak na 37,5 m2, a kryty taras z przodu namiotu jest po prostu świetny. To właśnie na nim zwykle przesiadywaliśmy podczas pobytu, rozkoszując się świeżym powietrzem i wolnością od życia biurowego czy mieszkania w mieście. Na campingu Polari parcele namiotowe są również bardzo przestronne, co dodatkowo zwiększa komfort mieszkania.
W sobotni wieczór Mrs B. i nasze psy miały wielką ochotę pobieżnie zwiedzić resztę campingu, więc udaliśmy się na plażę, będącą rzut kamieniem od naszego namiotu, gdzie zostaliśmy podziwiać zachód słońca nad morzem. Krystalicznie czysta woda i cudowny widok na pobliskie wyspy sprawiły, że poczuliśmy magię wakacji. Gdy nacieszyliśmy już oczy widokami, wróciliśmy do namiotu, by zająć się rozpalaniem pierwszego grilla na tym wyjeździe.
W niedzielę wybraliśmy się na dokładne zwiedzanie campingu i stwierdziliśmy, że jest świetnie wyposażony, zwłaszcza dla tych, którzy lubią zabawę w wodzie. Przy campingu jest pełen wybór plaż, które jak to w Chorwacji, są płaskie, zamiast piasku mają okrągłe kamyczki i betonowe pomosty. To właśnie taki typ plaży, jaki lubię.
Tym, z czym spotkałem się po raz pierwszy, były dmuchane place zabaw, pływające przy plaży. Były tam ścianki wspinaczkowe, zjeżdżalnia i platforma do skoków i nurkowania. Naprawdę wyjątkowe.
Odkryliśmy również, że Camping Polari posiada pierwszorzędny kompleks basenowy, w skład, którego wchodzą trzy duże baseny i strefa rozrywki, gdzie między innymi znajdowała się zjeżdżalnia tunelowa i wielkie, podwieszane wiadro z wodą, które upuszczało swoją zawartość na dzieci (albo dorosłych) poniżej.
Polari ma wszystkie udogodnienia, których można się spodziewać po dużym, nowoczesnym campingu, ale byliśmy tam raczej nastawieni na spokojne, relaksujące wakacje: na spacery nie na rozrywki, dlatego najpierw przeszliśmy się wzdłuż morza na północ od kempingu. Tam na pięknym wybrzeżu znajduje się Resort Villas Rubin, który ma tego samego właściciela, co Polari i własne plaże, z których można korzystać, a także wiele restauracji i barów wraz z dużym basenem i aquaparkiem, na który można wejść za opłatą (chociaż nie jestem pewien, czy ktoś miałby na to ochotę, skoro Polari ma swoje własne wspaniałe atrakcje wodne). Na północ od campingu i Villas Rubin polecam przejść się wzdłuż wybrzeża, aż do miasta Rovinj. Trasa, wijącą się przy samym brzegu ścieżką, liczy około 5,5 km, ale jest tego warta ze względu na widoki, z kolei inna krótsza trasa ma mniej niż 4 km. Rovinj to wspaniałe, dość eleganckie miasto, z wieloma restauracjami ulokowanymi na małych uliczkach i w pobliżu przystani.
Innego dnia wybraliśmy się na południe od campingu- to równie interesująca trasa, także, dlatego, że południowa część kempingu Polari jest przeznaczona dla nudystów. Motyw „powrotu do natury” jest popularny w Chorwacji i słusznie, ponieważ kraj ten szczyci się jednymi z najbardziej dziewiczych krajobrazów i linii brzegowych w Europie. W tej chwili to europejska stolica naturyzmu, a plaże dla nudystów są wyraźnie oznaczone niebieskimi literami FKK. Wygląda na to, że ubrania są całkowicie opcjonalne w tych obszarach i na szczęście dla mnie i Mrs B. nie trzeba było ich zdejmować. Za każdym razem, kiedy wędrowaliśmy w tę stronę, szybko przechodziliśmy przez strefę FKK, która miała zaledwie kilkaset metrów długości i oprócz spotkania ze starszym niemieckim dżentelmenem (który był zupełnie nagi) na pierwszej wyprawie nie mieliśmy już żadnych przygód. Nie trzeba dodawać, że chihuahua były o wiele mniej zaniepokojone i codziennie chodziły tak nagie i dumne jak nasz niemiecki przyjaciel.
Po opuszczeniu campingu i skierowaniu się na południe należy podążać wspaniałym „zielonym pasmem” biegnącym wzdłuż skalistego wybrzeża. To spektakularne miejsce, gdzie można odpocząć na łonie natury lub zejść jedną ze ścieżek w dół do morza i znaleźć własne zacisze do pływania lub opalania się w całkowitym spokoju.
Ścieżka ostatecznie prowadzi na Camping Vestar, który jest siostrzanym campingiem Polari i ma też tych samych właścicieli. Vestar jest podobny do Polari, ale o połowę mniejszy pod względem liczby stanowisk. Ma też równie wspaniały kompleks basenów (z którego mogli korzystać goście naszego campingu) oraz pływający plac zabaw na morzu. Za Vestar przybrzeżna ścieżka ciągnie się w nieskończoność i można chodzić tak daleko, jak tylko się chce. My jednak na ogół zatrzymywaliśmy się w małym lokalnym barze na plaży kilkaset metrów od Vestar, który był dość prosty, ale naprawdę przyjemny. Gdy siedzieliśmy na rustykalnych krzesłach i patrzyliśmy na błękitne morze z łodziami i wyspami na horyzoncie, łatwo było sobie wyobrazić, że jesteśmy na Karaibach. Po orzeźwiającym drinku zwykle szliśmy przez Camping Vestar i przez bramę frontową, za którą znajduje się kolejna zielona ścieżka bezpośrednio za parkingiem, która prowadzi z powrotem inną trasą do campingu Polari. Dzięki temu nasza trasa zataczała koło- taki przyjemny spacer zrobiliśmy sobie parę razy.
To naprawdę podsumowuje nasz relaksujący pobyt na campingu Polari. Wieczory spędzaliśmy na przygotowywaniu posiłków na grillu dostarczonym przez firmę ROAN, a następnie na kolacji pod namiotem przy lampce wina lub dwóch.
Mimo że bardzo dobrze bawiliśmy się w Polari, lubimy się przemieszczać na wakacjach i wypróbowywać nowe i różne campingi. W sobotę byliśmy, więc gotowi na podróż do naszego kolejnego celu: Cikat, na wyspie Losinj. Chociaż to tylko około 150 km dalej, wiedzieliśmy, że musimy poświęcić około czterech godzin na podróż, ponieważ obejmuje ona przeprawę promową i kilka małych nadmorskich dróg na wyspach Cres i Losinj.
Wyruszyliśmy o 10 rano po tym, jak pilot firmy ROAN skontrolował nasz namiot i zwrócił nam depozyt za sprzątanie w wysokości 100 euro. Podróż do Brestova (punkt odjazdu promu) była dość prosta i ponieważ musieliśmy czekać około 45 minut na następny prom, kupiliśmy na wczesny lunch kanapki i napoje w portowej kawiarni. Podróż promem do Porozina na Cres była krótka i przyjemna, trwała około 20 minut i kosztowała 151 kun (około 90 zł) za samochód i dwóch pasażerów.
Trasa przez Cres, a następnie do Losinj jest dość spektakularna, a droga, która chwilami biegnie bezpośrednio nad morzem, przypomina lokalizacje z „Top Gear”. W miarę jak jedzie się dalej na południe, do Losinj, roślinność staje się coraz bardziej bujna, a sam Camping Cikat, znajduje się w pięknym lesie sosnowym.
Po rejestracji w recepcji campingu spotkaliśmy się z naszym sympatycznym chorwackim pilotem, który pokazał nam nasz drugi w czasie tych wakacji namiot ROAN i niebawem mogliśmy odpocząć. Należy tutaj zwrócić uwagę na to, że na tym konkretnym campingu, samochodem można podjechać pod zakwaterowanie tylko, żeby wyładować bagaże, a następnie trzeba zaparkować go na parkingu campingowym. Nie było to niedogodne, ponieważ parking jest monitorowany 24 godziny na dobę, 7 dni w tygodniu, a stanowiska firmy ROAN znajdują się na górze campingu, w pobliżu parkingu i ogromnego Aquaparku.
Niedziela 10 czerwca- środa 13 czerwca – Camping Cikat i Mali Losinj
Aquapark (na który wstęp jest darmowy dla klientów firmy ROAN) wydawał się główną atrakcją dla większości rodzin na campingu Cikat, co jest zrozumiałe, ponieważ to wspaniały obiekt. My jednak chcieliśmy spędzić czas na spacerach po lesie i wybrzeżu, więc udaliśmy się ponownie do recepcji, gdzie otrzymaliśmy bezpłatną mapę pokazującą różne trasy spacerowe na wyspie. Jeśli, tak jak my jesteście miłośnikami pieszych wędrówek, pokochacie okolice campingu Cikat i Mali Losnij- są tam dobrze oznakowane trasy spacerowe obejmujące całą wyspę. Każdego dnia mogliśmy wybierać inne szlaki i wystarczyło parę kroków, żeby znaleźć się w otoczeniu pięknej przyrody, w niewielkiej odległości od campingu. Mogę szczerze powiedzieć, że nigdy nie widziałem tylu motyli w jednym miejscu.
Zrobiliśmy zbyt wiele tras, aby je szczegółowo opisać, ale jedną z dość krótkich wycieczek, które poleciłbym, jest spacer ścieżką bezpośrednio za campingiem i stanowiskami firmy ROAN aż do szczytu Monte Baston, który, mimo że jest dość małym wzgórzem, zapewnia wspaniały widok na cały półwysep i otaczające go morze. Stamtąd można szybko zejść na przeciwną stronę półwyspu, gdzie morze jest wyjątkowo spokojne, czyste i ciepłe. To dobre miejsce do nurkowania z rurką lub wybrania się w rejs łodzią o szklanym dnie, która wypływa z Mali Losnij kilkanaście razy dziennie. Pewnego razu podczas nurkowania z rurką byłem zaskoczony, kiedy natknąłem się na piękną syrenę z długimi blond włosami i rybim ogonem, choć szybko zdałem sobie sprawę, że była to lokalna dziewczyna, przebrana i prawdopodobnie zatrudniona przez właściciela łodzi do pływania wokół niej.
Przez większość wieczorów grillowaliśmy przed namiotem, ale ostatniego wybraliśmy się do portu w Mali Losnij i znaleźliśmy szczególnie miłą rodzinną restaurację z tarasem rozciągającym się nad portem, gdzie Mrs B. zamówiła świeżo złowioną rybę, a ja spróbowałem tradycyjnego Pljsekavica sa sirom.
Czwartek 14 czerwca – piątek 15 czerwca – Camping Bella Austria, Sankt Peter Am Kammersberg
W czwartek rano mieliśmy mieszane uczucia – smutek, ponieważ musieliśmy opuścić Chorwację, ale z drugiej strony cieszyliśmy się, ponieważ w drodze do domu zdecydowaliśmy się zatrzymać na dwie noce na jednym z naszych ulubionych campingów: Bella Austria. Dlaczego tak go lubimy? Jest mały, spokojny, ma wszystkie niezbędne udogodnienia i znajduje się w zapierającej dech w piersiach scenerii.
Droga znowu była prosta i bezproblemowa, więc na camping dotarliśmy około godziny 17.00. Firma ROAN nie ma namiotów na Bella Austria, więc postanowiliśmy spędzić ostatnie dwie noce naszych wakacji w mobile home’ie. Poczuliśmy się trochę dziwnie, gdy znaleźliśmy się w domku po prawie dwóch tygodniach spędzania wolnego czasu w namiocie. Wciąż mieliśmy jednak taras i niesamowity widok na góry otaczające camping, co jest jednym z powodów, dla których tak bardzo go uwielbiamy.
Byliśmy trochę zbyt zmęczeni, żeby gotować, więc poszliśmy za radą pilota firmy ROAN i zjedliśmy posiłek w restauracji z widokiem na basen. Jedzenie było doskonałe i w bardzo rozsądnych, według nas cenach (około 8 euro za danie główne).
Oczywiście istnieje wiele wspaniałych tras wokół Bella Austria, od szlaku wzdłuż rzeki do lokalnego miasteczka, aż po trudne wędrówki do lodowca. Jednak mieliśmy tylko jeden dzień, więc zdecydowaliśmy się odwiedzić dwie niezbyt odległe lokalne atrakcje, które wcześniej przegapiliśmy: górskie jezioro Etrachsee i wodospad Gunster Wasserfall. Oba te miejsca znajdują się w odległości krótkiej jazdy na zachód (12 – 15 km) za miejscowością Schoder. Żadne z nich nas nie rozczarowało, zrobiliśmy miły spacer dookoła Etrachsee, które jest idealnym miejscem na odpoczynek, a następnie wspięliśmy się drewnianymi schodami do wodospadu w drodze powrotnej. Wodospad był znacznie większy niż się spodziewaliśmy, zdjęcia nie oddają mu sprawiedliwości- jest naprawdę wysoki i spektakularny.
Sobota 16 czerwca – podróż do domu
Popełniliśmy błąd, że nie opuściliśmy campingu przed godziną 10 następnego ranka, ponieważ natknęliśmy się na dość duży ruch na trasie i wróciliśmy do Wrocławia dopiero po godzinie 20.00, (z przerwą na jedzenie). Z perspektywy czasu uważam, że powinniśmy byli wyjechać o 7.00, wtedy podróż byłaby całkiem wygodna.
W drodze powrotnej mogliśmy rozmyślać o naszych wspaniałych wakacjach i porównać namiot Lodge Holiday z firmy ROAN z namiotem Safari z firmy EUROCAMP (EUROCAMP ma kilka znakomicie ulokowanych namiotów Safari na Bella Austria, bezpośrednio na górze campingu).
Oba rodzaje namiotów oferują naszym zdaniem bardzo dobre warunki, a fakt, że oba mają tarasy, jest ogromnym plusem. Namioty sprawdzają się nawet w trakcie deszczu. W Chorwacji, mimo, że jednego dnia mieliśmy ogromną burzę i ulewę, wnętrze namiotu wcale nie zamokło. Co więcej mogliśmy usiąść na naszym osłoniętym tarasie i cieszyć się spektakularną burzą na zewnątrz bez ryzyka zmoczenia. Naprawdę podobała nam się sofa zewnętrzna w namiocie firmy ROAN, która z pewnością przekonałaby nas, abyśmy ponownie wybrali ten namiot, ale… Podczas gdy łóżka w firmie ROAN są, co prawda pełnowymiarowe i bardzo wygodne to namiot Safari z firmy EUROCAMP ma rustykalne „prawdziwe” meble i bardzo podoba nam się jego styl. W sumie trudno będzie zdecydować, który namiot wybierzemy w przyszłym roku, ale dobrze mieć taki wybór!

Friday 1st June – Holiday time at last.
Having not had a “proper” holiday for three years my wife (Mrs B.) and I were really looking forward to revisiting Croatia and Austria, in our opinion probably the two most beautiful and spectacular destinations in Europe. Walking is our hobby and both countries offer lots of very varied and interesting routes so our pet Chihuahuas (who can walk an amazingly long distance) were also pretty excited, although it wasn’t necessarily showing.
Our first destination was Camping Polari near Rovinj in Istria and we decided to drive from Wrocław even though there are flights available to Pula (only 38km away) and Trieste (145km). We quite enjoy driving long distances and also like the advantages of having our own car on holiday – as well as, of course, the opportunity to pack it with food, wine, beer and dog treats for the whole holiday.
We knew the trip from Wrocław to Camping Polari is around 1,100km, just over 11 hours actual driving or say 13 hours allowing for good rest breaks. In the past we have done that type of drive direct overnight to avoid traffic but on this occasion we decided to split the journey into two. I had to work on Friday morning but I was hoping to finish at lunch time and so we planned to head for Brno in Czech (290 km, around 4 hours) on Friday afternoon then start early on Saturday to finish the drive.
Unfortunately and as tends to be the case when you want to leave early, everything went wrong at work on Friday morning and we weren’t actually able to leave until 16.00. Therefore we had to revise our plans and booked a night at a Campanile hotel, just off the motorway at Katowice. The hotel was pretty good value at around 100 PLN for the night and as we were tired we were happy to find a McDonalds opposite, where we ate and then headed to bed ready to start early the next day.
Saturday 2nd June – The Journey.
We left Katowice at 6.00 on Saturday morning and headed through Czech, Austria and Slovenia to reach Croatia. The drive went amazingly well, the roads were quite clear and the weather was fine, so we arrived at camping Polari feeling quite happy at around 17.00. We had decided to try a “ROAN” holiday this year as we love staying in tents and having stayed in a few EUROCAMP safari tents (superb!) in the past, we wanted to experience the Roan Lodge Holiday tents to see how they compare. We checked in first at the Polari Camping reception, where the staff were very helpful and provided us with maps of the campsite and the surrounding are, then we were directed to the ROAN and GO4CAMP reception on site.
The ROAN courier showed us to our accommodation and our first impression of the Lodge Holiday tent was excellent, I’m not sure the brochure pictures do it justice because it is really very spacious at 37.5m2 and the lounge facility on the covered outside deck at the front is just great. Throughout the holiday that is mainly where we sat, enjoying the outdoors and feeling truly free from office and apartment living. On Camping Polari the emplacements for the Lodge Holiday tents are also very generous, making it very comfortable indeed.
On Saturday evening Mrs B and the dogs were quite keen to do an initial exploration of the campsite so we headed for the beach, which is just a short walk away, where we were able to watch the sun setting over the sea. The clear water and the superb view out to the island off the coast made the journey seem well worth the while and we were quite content to return to our tent and light the first barbecue of many.
Sunday 3rd – Friday 8th – Camping Polari, Camping Vestar and Rovinj.
On Sunday we did a much fuller exploration of the campsite and discovered that it has really great facilities, particularly for those who enjoy the water. There are a variety of “beaches” fronting the campsite onto the sea although, as is normal in Croatia, these tend to be based on flat surfaces created on the rocks, concrete piers, pebble beaches and grass areas set a little back from the sea. Personally this is the type of coastline I prefer.
Something I have never seen before and which I was impressed by is what I can only describe as an inflatable adventure playground actually floating and moored on the sea. It has a climbing area, a slide and a platform for jumping and diving. Truly special.
We also found that Polari has a superb pool complex featuring three large pools and a “splash area” where amongst other things there is a tunnel slide and a huge swinging bucket which is gradually filled until it suddenly tips its contents onto the kids (or adults) below.
Polari has all the features you would expect on a large, modern campsite but we were very much there for a quiet, relaxing walking holiday rather than for excitement, therefore we first headed off along the coast path to the north of the campsite. Here there is a beautiful coastline that passes through “Resort Villas Rubin” which shares the same owner as Polari and has its own beaches that you can use as well as a variety of restaurants and bars together with a large pool and aquapark that you can pay to enter if you wish to (although I am not sure why anyone would want to when Polari has its own superb water facilities). Going north of the campsite and Villas Rubin you are able to walk along the coast path all the way to the town of Rovinj. Following the bends of the coastpath this is about 5.5km (well worth it for the views) although there is also a more direct path of less than 4km. Rovinj is a super town, quite sophisticated now and with a wide variety of restaurants around the Marina and in the small back streets.
On other days we chose to go south of the campsite which is an equally interesting walk, not least because the southern part of Camping Polari is devoted to naturism. The whole “back to nature” theme is huge in Croatia and rightly so because it boasts some of the most unspoilt countryside and coastline in Europe. It is also seems to be the naturism capital of Europe and areas that are devoted to naturism are clearly marked with blue FKK signs. It seems that clothes are totally optional in these areas although fortunately for me and Mrs B. it did not seem to be compulsory to remove ones clothes. Each time we went south we proceeded quickly through the FKK zone which was only a couple of hundred metres long and apart from meeting a rather large older German gentleman (who was completely naked) on the first expedition we had no further scares. Needless to say the Chihuahua’s were much less concerned and walked through each day just as naked and proud as our German friend.
Once you leave the campsite and head south you follow a superb “green lane” that runs alongside the rocky coast. This is spectacular and as close to nature as you could want to be and there are lots of paths down to the sea where you can find your own sanctuary for swimming or sunbathing in total peace.
The path eventually leads into Camping Vestar, which is Polari’s sister site and again shares the same owners. The site is similar to Polari but around half the size in terms of the number of emplacements. It has a similar superb swimming pool complex and adventure playground in the sea and it was possible to use these facilities as guests at Polari.
Beyond Vestar the coast path continues ad infinitum and it is possible to walk as far as you like. We however generally stopped at a small local beach bar a couple of hundred yards beyond Vestar which was quite basic but really enjoyable as sitting on the rustic chairs and looking at the blue sea with boats and islands dotted on the horizon it was easily possible to imagine we were in the Caribbean.
After a refreshing drink we generally headed up through Camping Vestar and through the front gate, after which there is another green lane directly after the car park that leads back on another route to camping Polari. This therefore made a really nice circular walk which we followed on a few occasions.
That really summarises our relaxing stay at Camping Polari. Evenings were spent cooking on the barbecue supplied by ROAN and then enjoying dinner outside our tent with a glass of wine or two. We had bought wine, pasta, rice etc. with us from Poland and we were able to buy meat for the barbecue at a reasonable price from Lidl, which was less than 4km away on the edge of Rovinj.
Saturday 9th – Journey to Cikat
Although we thoroughly enjoyed our time on Polari, we like to move around on holiday and try new and different sites. On Saturday we were therefore ready for the drive to our next site, Cikat, on the island of Losinj. Although only around 150km away we knew we needed to allow around four hours for the journey as it involves a ferry crossing and some small coastal roads on the islands of Cres and Losinj itself.
We set off at 10am after the ROAN courier had inspected our tent and returned our 100 Euro cleaning deposit. The journey to Brestova (the ferry departure point) was quite straightforward and we had about 45 minutes to wait for the next ferry, so bought a sandwich and drink from the “port café” as an early lunch. The ferry journey across to Porozina on Cres was a short and enjoyable trip, taking around 20 minutes and costing 151 kn (about 90PLN) one way for a car and two passengers.
The drive down through Cres and then on to Losinj is quite spectacular and at times the road, which often runs directly above the sea, reminds you of a location on “Top Gear”. As you get further South into Losinj, the countryside becomes more and more lush and when you arrive at the approach to Camping Cikat you find that it is nestled in a beautiful Pine forest.
After registering at the campsite reception we met our friendly Croatian courier who showed us to our second ROAN Lodge holiday tent of our holiday and we soon made ourselves at home. One thing to note here is that on this particular campsite, with ROAN, you can only bring your car in to unload and then need to park it in the campsite car park. This was no inconvenience as the car park is monitored 24/7 and the ROAN emplacements are at the top of the site, close to both the car park and the huge on site Aquapark.
Sunday 10th – Wednesday 13th June – Camping Cikat and Mali Losnij
The Aquapark (which is free entry for ROAN guests) did seem to be the main attraction for most families on Camping Cikat and understandably so because it is a super facility. We, however, wanted to spend our time exploring the forest and the coast so we headed for Campsite Reception again where we obtained a free map showing all the various walking routes on the island. If you are a walker you will love the area surrounding Camping Cikat and Mali Losnij because there are well marked walking routes covering the whole island. We were able to do different walks each day and it is amazing on such a relatively small peninsula that you are able to find yourself alone and surrounded by beautiful nature, just a short distance from the camp site. I can honestly say that I have never seen so many butterflies in one place.
We did too many routes to describe in detail but one fairly short outing that I would recommend is to join the public footpath directly behind the campsite and the ROAN emplacements and follow it up to the top of “Monte Baston” which whilst being a fairly small hill, affords a wonderful view of the whole peninsula and the sea surrounding it. From there you can quickly go down to the opposite side of the peninsula from Camping Cikat where the sea is exceptionally calm, clear and warm. A good place for snorkelling off the rocks or watching tourists on the glass bottomed “red submarine” that sails out of Mali Losnij throughout the day. On one occasion whilst snorkelling I was even surprised to come across a beautiful mermaid complete with long blonde hair and fish tail although I soon realised that it was a local girl, dressed up and presumably employed by the submarine owner to swim around the boat.
Most nights we chose to barbecue outside the tent again but on our last night we did walk into Mali Losnij port and found a particularly nice family owned restaurant with a deck stretching out over the harbour, where Mrs B. had locally caught fish and I enjoyed the traditional “Pljsekavica sa sirom”.
Thursday 14th June – Friday 15th June – Camping Bella Austria, Sankt Peter Am Kammersberg.
On Thursday morning we had mixed emotions – sad because we had to leave Croatia but on the other hand happy because on the way home we had decided to stop for two nights at one of our very favourite camp sites, Bella Austria. Why do we like is so much? – because it’s small, peaceful, has good facilities and is surrounded by breath-taking scenery.
Again the drive was straight forward and uneventful and we arrived on Bella Austria at around 17.00. ROAN do not have tents on Bella Austria so we had decided to spend the last two nights of our holiday in a mobile home. It felt quite strange and perhaps a little restrictive being inside a mobile home after having enjoyed the freedom and outdoor feel of a tent for almost two weeks. We did however still have a deck and the most amazing view of the mountains surrounding the campsite which is one of the reasons we love it so much.
We were a little too tired to cook so we followed the ROAN courier’s advice and had a meal outside the on-site restaurant, overlooking the pool. The food was excellent and very reasonable in our opinion at around 8 euro for a main course.
There are of course many excellent walks around Bella Austria ranging from the genteel path along the river into the local town and ranging right up to some challenging climbs up to glaciers. However, we only had one day to make the most of it so we decided to visit two relatively local attractions that we had previously missed: the Etrachsee (a mountain lake) and the Gunster Wasserfall. Both are located a short drive West (12 – 15km) beyond the village of Schoder. Neither of them disappointed, we did a nice circular walk all around the Etrachsee which was just the right length on a rest day and then climbed the wooden stair route beside the waterfall on the way back to the site. The waterfall was much bigger than we expected, pictures do not do it justice because it is really tall and spectacular.
Saturday 16th June – journey home.
We made the mistake of not leaving Bella Austria until 10.30 the next morning and as we finally encountered some fairly heavy traffic on route we did not arrive back in Wroclaw until 20.00, having stopped for food. In hindsight we should have left at 07.00 and then the journey would have been quite comfortable.
On the way back, we were able to reflect on a wonderful holiday and our thoughts turned back to the ROAN Lodge Holiday tent in comparison to the EUROCAMP safari tent. (Eurocamp have some superbly positioned Safari tents on Bella Austria, right at the top of the site and making the most of the views).
Both types of tents offer superb accommodation in our opinion and the fact that they are both located on raise decks is a huge plus for both of them. It just takes any negatives associated with rain completely out of the picture. We did have a huge thunderstorm and heavy downpour at one time in Croatia and the inside of the tent did not get wet at all. In fact we were still able to sit in the front “porch” and enjoy the spectacular storm outside without getting wet. We really did enjoy the “Love to Lounge” outdoor sofa in the ROAN tent and that might certainly persuade us to favour the ROAN tent again but…. Whilst the ROAN beds are full size and very comfortable….. the EUROCAMP safari tent has the rustic “real” furniture and we like its overall style. All in all it is a difficult choice to decide which tent to have next year… but a good choice to have to make.
